KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysians are advised to avoid wearing items related to the Israel-Palestine conflict in Singapore.
This warning is based on an advisory from Singapore’s Home Ministry, which has warned that travellers could be barred from entering the city state, and that individuals may be liable to a fine of up to S$500 (RM1,700) or imprisonment for a term of up to six months, or both if they fail to comply.
In the advisory issued today, the ministry said it was aware that apparel and paraphernalia featuring foreign national emblems related to the conflict are being sold online and worn or displayed by members of the public.
“We have also received queries on the actions that will be taken if such items are displayed or worn in Singapore, including by travellers seeking to enter Singapore.”
“All travellers using our checkpoints are also advised not to display or wear such articles. The authorities will take firm action against those who refuse to comply, including denying their entry into Singapore.”
While the advisory did not single out any particular nationality, the ministry explained that the public display of foreign national emblems without a permit is an offence under the Foreign National Emblems (Control of Display) Act 1949.
Given the “emotive” nature of the conflict, the ministry advises against the public display and wearing of articles related to the conflict due to heightened sensitivities.
Of particular note in the advisory is the prohibition of promoting or supporting terrorism through the display of apparel or paraphernalia that carry logos of “terrorist” or “militant” groups.
The ministry made it clear that “promoting or supporting terrorism through the display of apparel or paraphernalia that carry logos of terrorist or militant groups, such as Hamas or its military wing Al-Qassam Brigades, will not be condoned.”
It also underscored the importance of maintaining peace and harmony between different races and religions in Singapore, saying external events should not disrupt the peace and harmony the nation enjoys.
“The peace and harmony between different races and religions in Singapore should not be taken for granted,” the ministry stated.
