Shouting match in Dewan: reps in heated exchange ordered to exit, grab coffee

MPs clash over the teaching of Qunut Nazilah in schools

8:06 PM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR – It was another screaming contest at the Dewan Rakyat today between Mohd Sany Hamzan (Hulu Langat-PH) and Mohd Misbahul Munir Masduki (Parit Buntar-PN) on the Qunut Nazilah issue.

It all started when Sany attempted to visibly annoy Misbahul, who was in the middle of directing his questions to Religious Affairs Minister Mohd Na’im Mokhtar.

The questions raised were about the government’s allocation to religious schools and about teachers being able to support whichever political party they choose.

The Perikatan Nasional lawmaker could be seen annoyed when Sany interrupted every time he was asking Na’im questions. The Hulu Langat MP could also be seen agreeing with Misbahul on some of the issues.

“I agree. Teachers can support whoever they want. But not in school. However, outside of school… yes. They can support (anyone) freely,” Sany said.

However, the Parit Buntar MP was unimpressed with Sany’s sudden show of hot and cold support for his question, calling the Amanah party member “rude”.

Misbahul then told Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul that Sany had “disturbed” him and requested a slight extension of time to wrap up his speech.

He then proceeded to ask the minister why Qunut Nazilah was not allowed to be taught in schools.

Qunut Nazilah is a prayer that is commonly used during major disasters.

This clearly irked both Sany and Mohammed Taufiq Johari (Sg Petani-PH), as they once again interrupted Misbahul while holding the Blue Standing Orders of the Dewan Rakyat book.

“This is slander! It is okay to not follow the (Dewan Rakyat) rule, but it is never okay to slander!” both MPs shouted.

The berate screams of “slander” directed at Misbahul continued even after the speaker muted their microphones, as their screams could still be heard in the background.

Johari then ordered both Sany and Misbahul to leave the lower House and get some coffee.

“That’s it! Hulu Langat, Parit Buntar, please leave the Dewan Rakyat. Go get some coffee or walk it off.

“Just leave for today and come back tomorrow,” said Johari. – November 6, 2023
