Dr Mahathir used ‘dirty tactics’ to end Anwar’s political career: Mark Trowell

KUALA LUMPUR – Mark Trowell, the Australian criminal lawyer who authored the recently released book Anwar Triumphs, has recounted how former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad employed underhanded tactics to end Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s political career.

Trowell explained that Dr Mahathir resorted to the use of morally questionable criminal allegations against the 10th prime minister as ammunition to create a negative perception of the leader.

“What is disheartening is that Dr Mahathir’s actions forced Anwar to face imprisonment, even though the accusations were deemed politically motivated for personal gain,” he said.

“(However) who could have foreseen a leader who had faced numerous obstacles and challenges in his political career having to spend over 10 years in prison before becoming the prime minister.”

Trowell made these remarks during the launching of Anwar Triumphs at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre today.

Anwar Triumphs, a 195-page book, was officially launched by Anwar, who was accompanied by his wife, Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail.

Trowell emphasised that the book narrates Anwar’s extraordinary journey, including the highs and lows he encountered in the country’s politics, and it must be presented in detail to the public before fading into memory.

At the same time, he acknowledged that Anwar would not have been able to overcome these challenges and reach his current position without the unwavering support of his wife.

“Hence, I chose a picture of both of them (Anwar and Dr Wan Azizah) for the cover of Anwar Triumphs,” he said.

The public can purchase Anwar Triumphs at all major bookstores nationwide starting today. – October 29, 2023
