KUALA LUMPUR – A total of 2.49 million 5G service subscriptions have been recorded, equivalent to a 7.4% adoption rate, said Communications and Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzil (Lembah Pantai-PH).

“So far, six mobile service providers have offered 5G commercial plans – CelcomDigi, Maxis, U Mobile, Telekom Malaysia, YTL Communications, and Yoodo,” he said during a question-and-answer session, responding to a question from Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani (Titiwangsa-BN) on the 5G network services.

Also, a total of 5,873 5G sites have been completed as of September 30, with 1,636 more to go to achieve the target of 80% 5G network coverage in populated areas by year end.

The completed sites have achieved 70.2% coverage of populated areas.

Fahmi said the Rahmah 5G Package, which was launched on August 31, had received 50,991 subscriptions as of the end of last month.

He added that the implementation of 5G in Malaysia was faster than the 4G network implementation.

“During the 4G implementation, U Mobile was the fastest with the construction of 2,000 towers in a year, while DNB completed more than 3,500 towers in the first year

“On sustainability, in many countries, including the Republic of Korea, the penetration level for 5G has reached over 95%, the adoption rate among consumers is low, not more than 50%.”

The implementation of the 5G network is being carried out by Digital Nasional Bhd, with the target of developing 7,509 5G sites nationwide by the end of the year. – October 9, 2023
