Buggy iOS 17 to blame for overheating Apple iPhone 15 models

Firm acknowledges bug affecting some users, with recent updates to third-party applications causing system strain

KUALA LUMPUR – Less than three weeks after the iPhone 15 was launched, Apple said the new models are faced with heating issues due to bugs in iOS 17, bugs in third-party apps, and a temporary set-up period.

However, there is no set date when Apple will roll-out software updates to address these issues, only that they will not affect device performance.

The tech giant told CNBC that it found a bug in iOS 17 that is impacting some users, while some recent updates to third-party apps are causing iPhone 15 models to overload the system.

“We have identified a few conditions that can cause the iPhone to run warmer than expected. The device may feel warmer during the first few days after setting up or restoring the device because of increased background activity.

“We’re working with these app developers on fixes that are in the process of rolling out,” a spokesperson was quoted as saying.

There has been a barrage of complaints after the release of the new models, pointing to all four models getting hotter than expected during use.

Apple also said the titanium chassis design with aluminium frames did not contribute to the overheating problems and dissipated heat better than the stainless steel used in previous models.

Currently, Apple warns that users may notice the phones feeling hotter when they are set up from a backup, during wireless charging, using graphics-heavy apps or games, or streaming high-quality video.

The company added the phones are safe to use as long as they do not display a temperature warning.

A phone reviewer reportedly shared that his iPhone 15 Pro Max’s temperature climbed to 36 degrees Celsius within minutes after opening the Instagram app. Instagram released an update recently. – October 1, 2023
