China Open: Malaysian mixed doubles pairs’ journey ends in semifinal heartbreak

11th-ranked Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei fails to maintain winning streak

KUALA LUMPUR – National mixed doubles pair Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei’s China Open campaign came to an end today when they were defeated in the semifinals by France’s Thom Gicquel-Delphine Delrue.

The pair, ranked 11th in the world, were unable to maintain their winning streak against the French pair, ranked eighth in the world. They lost in straight sets, with scores of 21-16, 21-13.

Tan Kian Meng-Lai Pei Jing’s run also came to an end at the hands of the newly crowned world champions from South Korea, Seo Seung-jae-Chae Yu-jung. They lost the match 21-19, 21-11 in 34 minutes.

Seung-jae-Yu-jung will now face France’s Thom Gicquel-Delphine Delrue in the final.

Former national pair Chan Peng Soon-Goh Liu Ying remain the only Malaysians who have qualified for the final stage of the China Open in the mixed doubles category.

In the 2012 tournament, the 2016 Olympic silver medalist duo lost 15-21, 17-21 to China’s Xu Chen-Ma Jin. – September 9, 2023
