Sports association leaders must be highly committed, practice good governance: Hannah

Former athletes are encouraged to contribute development ideas at the grassroots level

REMBAU — Sports associations must be led by highly committed individuals, who practise good governance, to advance national sports.

Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh said these leaders must also have the time to serve and be able to make the associations competitive enough for sports development.

She said it is also essential for former athletes to participate in sports associations in terms of contributing development ideas at the grassroots level.

“Therefore, the National Sports Council (MSN) is conducting leadership courses… because we realise the associations need funds, that is why they choose corporate and political figures.

“I do not want sports associations to be misused as political platforms…we want sports to progress,” she said during a family camping programme press conference here today.

She was responding to a query on the appropriateness of former athletes holding positions in sports associations.

Hannah said it is crucial to maintain a balance in sports associations with the involvement of experienced individuals, both women and men. — September 3, 2023
