KUALA LUMPUR – A married Muslim couple was subjected to an early morning ‘khalwat’ (close proximity) check by religious authorities after a restaurant operator allegedly lodged a report against them, following a spat over her service.
Based on a recent TikTok video posted by Zed Rodzuan, the incident – which has gone viral – reportedly took place at about 4am on an undisclosed date when the couple’s motel room door was repeatedly knocked on by what was believed to be the religious authorities.
However, the cause of their problems might have been a particularly vindictive restaurant owner.

In the clip, Zed was seen being interrogated by the officials regarding his relationship with his wife.
Upon learning that they were recently married and had the legal documents as evidence, the religious officers congratulated the couple on their recent wedding before leaving the motel.
Zed did not disclose the name of the motel in question or the location of the incident.
The couple are said to have rented the motel room before heading off on their honeymoon in Paris, France.
In the video, the wife could be heard saying: “I told you not to check into this cheap place. Now we’ve been caught for being in close proximity.”
In another separate video, he explained that he and his wife’s predicament was due to their not-too-friendly encounte tor with a restaurateur, who they claim was behind the report.

“(Here’s) the story, we were patronising this mak cik’s (auntie’s) restaurant. We waited an hour for our food, so we put money on the table and left because we were starving, and went to a mamak restaurant next door,” Zed said in his post’s caption.
“This was the beginning of all the problems.”
He explained that they patronised the woman’s restaurant, but left the premises after their orders took over an hour to arrive.
Dissatisfied with the couple’s decision, the restaurateur was said to have followed them to a nearby mamak restaurant and recorded them.
However, the series of unfortunate events did not end for the couple, as the restauranteur allegedly instructed the help of another man – believed to be her husband – to follow the couple back to their hotel room.
Zed believed it gave the restauranteur and her husband “proof” to lodge a report against the couple.
Expressing his frustration, Zed slapped the couple’s marriage card on his forehead to demonstrate that their relationship was not unlawful.
Zed’s post was filled with comments lambasting the restauranteur for her behaviour, demanding the couple disclose the restaurant’s name.
Other netizens also opined that government agencies, especially religious authorities, should make improvements to their enforcement processes so that they could avoid similar incidences in the future. – August 7, 2023
