Syed Saddiq challenges youth leaders to debate

Move aims to showcase potential of ‘new politics’, focusing on direction of younger generation

KUALA LUMPUR – Muda president Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman has challenged youth leaders from various political parties to a debate on the direction of the younger generation.

The Muar MP suggested that if the debate were to take place, he could represent Muda and electoral partner Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM), while PKR Youth chief Adam Adli Abd Halim could be the voice of the Pakatan Harapan (PH) and Barisan Nasional (BN) coalitions.

Perikatan Nasional (PN), he added, could opt to field PAS Youth chief Ahmad Fadhli Shaari.

“I respect both (Adam and Fadhli). My suggestion that we have a debate is not to embarrass or assassinate anyone’s character, but to show youths that we can bring new politics,” he said during a press conference at Muda’s headquarters here today.

“I hope that the youth leaders are open to this suggestion. Are we just going to let senior leaders like (PKR deputy president) Rafizi Ramli do all the debating? The people must be able to see for themselves the direction of each party.”

Previously, PN’s Bachok MP Syahir Sulaiman decided to take up Economy Minister Rafizi Ramli’s challenge to a debate on the economy, which will be held on August 9.

Meanwhile, Syed Saddiq announced that all 19 of Muda’s state election candidates have declared their assets and called on the federal government to name and shame parties that are ostensibly objecting to ministers declaring their assets.

“I’d like to remind the PH-BN government today that PH had previously promised and given their commitment to declare their assets, especially for cabinet ministers. It has been eight months since the cabinet’s formation, and this (asset declaration) has not been done.

“It would be unfair to always blame BN whenever reformation is not implemented, (as) when BN formed the government with PN, ministers then declared their assets.

“If it is true that a BN or Umno minister is afraid to declare their assets, then the government must expose the person,” he added. – August 3, 2023
