KUALA LUMPUR – National and Selangor FC footballer Faisal Halim, also known as Mickey, was on the verge of quitting the sport he loves to ensure the safety of himself and his family following a horrific acid attack.
In an emotional press conference at the Selangor Football training centre today, Faisal recounted the terrifying experience, which left him with fourth-degree burns and required intensive care and multiple surgeries, including a skin transplant with skin imported from Belgium.
Faisal, 26, was attacked on May 5 while with his family at a shopping centre in Petaling Jaya.
Despite his stable condition and discharge from the hospital, he remains in the early stages of recovery before he can begin sports rehabilitation.
Reflecting on the ordeal, Faisal revealed it was Selangor FC deputy president Datuk Seri Shahril Mokhtar who persuaded and encouraged him to reconsider his decision to retire.
“It was very painful, the acid attack was unbearable. I was ready to sacrifice my football career along with thousands of ringgit of salary as long as my family is safe,” Faisal said, tears streaming down his face.
“I was prepared to return to my hometown in Penang and live an ordinary life. I couldn’t bear living in fear. But Datuk Shahril showed faith in me and assured me that the safety of me and my family would be taken care of.”
Faisal disclosed that he had been living in a secret location since his discharge from the hospital.
“I can’t live in hiding forever. I told Datuk Shahril I was ready to live a normal life. That’s why I’m here today, addressing the media,” he added.
Thanks to his faith and determination, Faisal has decided to return to football, working hard to overcome his trauma.
According to Transfermarkt, Faisal is currently the highest-paid local footballer in Malaysia, earning a monthly salary of RM120,000.
Known for his friendly and approachable demeanour, Faisal hinted at a potential change in his personality to protect himself and his family.
“Everyone knows my character. I’ve never been arrogant, whether to the people below or above me.
“I have no problems with anyone and do not know if I have enemies. I always smile and cheer up the team. I make my team happy.
“But if being too nice is a problem, maybe I need to change.”
Faisal, who joined the Red Giants from Terengganu FC last year, scored 12 goals in 28 appearances across all competitions last season.
Selangor currently ranks fourth in the Super League table with six points from three games, having played only two matches after withdrawing from the Charity Shield, resulting in a walkover win and three points for Johor Darul Ta’zim. – June 13, 2024
