KUALA LUMPUR – Mohd Azizi Abu Naim has made a court challenge to remain as Nenggiri’s representative at the Kelantan State Assembly.

According to lawyers representing the recently-booted state assemblyman, Azizi filed an action at the high court here seeking various declaratory orders, including one to nullify Kelantan Assembly Speaker Datuk Mohd Amar Abdullah’s decision to vacate his seat.

Azizi also applied for various interlocutory injunctions preventing the Election Commission (EC) from taking any further steps such as declaring the Nenggiri seat vacant pending the resolution of the matter in court.

“The application will be heard at the Kuala Lumpur High Court tomorrow at 4.30pm,” lead counsel Datuk Seri Rajan Navaratnam said when contacted.

According to the originating summons dated June 24 sighted by Scoop, Azizi named Bersatu president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, party secretary-general Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainuddin and Amar as defendants.

Based on previous reports, EC has set a meeting this Friday to discuss preparations for a possible Nenggiri by-election.

Azizi’s suit follows Bersatu’s decision to end the Nenggiri assemblyman’s party membership after he failed to withdraw his support towards Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

Azizi, also Gua Musang MP, is among six Bersatu MPs who have pledged their support for Anwar.

Besides Azizi, representatives affected are Datuk Syed Abu Hussin Hafiz Syed Abdul Fasal (Bukit Gantang MP), Zahari Kechik (Jeli MP), Datuk Iskandar Dzulkarnain Abdul Khalid (Kuala Kangsar MP), Datuk Suhaili Abdul Rahman (Labuan MP), and Datuk Dr Zulkafperi Hanafi (Tg Karang MP).

The other is state assemblyman Datuk Abdul Rashid Asari (Selat Klang). – June 26, 2024
