MCMC calls for removal of Zayn Rayyan case leaks from social media

Commission asks TikTok, Telegram to remove these materials, citing concerns about interference with ongoing legal proceedings

KUALA LUMPUR – The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has requested social media platforms to remove alleged leaks related to the investigation of murdered autistic boy Zayn Rayyan Abdul Matiin.

This came after identifying users of several social media websites that showed the alleged leaks to the public, the agency added.

The MCMC has submitted a request to social media platform operators, including TikTok and Telegram, for the contents’ removal,” it said in a statement today.

“The dissemination of alleged investigation information on the case is irresponsible and may interfere with the case’s trial.”

MCMC reminded the public against sharing unauthentic or false information and for the involved social media users to remove their posts about the case, which could lead to speculation.

The agency added that sharing false or unverified information breaches Section 233 of the MCMC Act 1998 and could result in a fine of no more than RM50,000 and jail for up to a year, or both, if convicted.

Additional fines amounting to RM1,000 for every day the offence continues after conviction may also be applied, MCMC added.

Yesterday, Selangor police chief Datuk Hussein Omar Khan said the police are looking into the leak posted by whistleblower group Edisi Siasat on Telegram, which depicted an investigation officer’s report on the investigation against Zayn’s parents.

The parents, Zaim Ikhwan Zahari and Ismanira Abdul Manaf, as well as their extended family, have come under public scrutiny after screenshots of the leak surfaced on social media.

Subsequently, a family member filed a police report against Edisi Siasat’s leak, which he described as slanderous against the couple.

On Thursday, Zayn’s parents were charged with child neglect offences. They pleaded not guilty and were released with RM10,000 bail each.

On December 6, last year, Zayn’s body was found at a stream near Idaman Apartments, Damansara Damai.

A post-mortem indicated that the 6-year-old boy was killed, based on injuries found on his neck and body. – June 15, 2024
