New car, broken axle: 600 Omoda 5 SUVs may be affected, says Chery Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR – Chery Auto Malaysia said approximately 600 units of its Omoda 5 model sports utility vehicles (SUVs) are potentially affected by defective parts.

In a statement, the automaker said it has initiated contact with its spare parts vendor and conducted a thorough analysis of the malfunctions observed in this model.

“In our commitment to transparency and accountability, we have engaged with the spare parts vendor and conducted an extensive analysis.

“As a result, we have identified approximately 600 Omoda 5s that may be potentially affected by the upgrade works at the vendor’s facilities,” it said.

Furthermore, Chery announced plans to reach out to its customers based on the affected vehicle identification numbers to conduct inspections and address any technical component issues as a precautionary measure.

Affected Omoda 5 owners will soon have access to a dedicated website to verify if their vehicle is impacted, ensuring peace of mind.

Last Saturday, an Omoda 5 user named Stephanie took to Facebook to raise concerns about her vehicle’s rear axle, which appeared to have snapped while she was navigating a bend on the road.

An axle, a critical vehicle component, is a rod or shaft that connects a pair of wheels to propel them and maintain the position of the wheels relative to each other.

Following the incident, she reported that her car had been towed to Chery’s Balakong service centre and was awaiting a full investigation.

In response, Chery clarified that the report is a separate case that has been resolved.

“The issue reported by a customer on Facebook recently has been classified as an isolated case.

“We successfully addressed this matter by replacing the rear beam axle component and having a quality control test on the vehicle. We can confirm that this has been successfully resolved.”

It was reported earlier this month that another Omoda 5 user gained attention for expressing frustration over her car’s faulty brakes.

Her frustration escalated when the issues were not adequately addressed by the company’s service centre, despite numerous attempts for clarification.

However, Chery and Puspakom resolved the issue on April 6, stating that an investigation revealed that the vehicle is safe and the brake system is in good condition, as confirmed by Puspakom’s test results. – April 30, 2024
