KUALA LUMPUR – This may be the last extension the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) will be giving former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s sons – Mirzan and Tan Sri Mokhzani to declare their assets.

A source told Scoop that the graft busters granted the brothers another month to declare all movable and immovable assets in their possessions per the notice issued under Section 36(1)(b) of the MACC Act 2009.

Earlier, Mirzan’s deadline was set for April 15 while Mokhzani’s was April 25.

With this new extension, Mirzan has until May 15 and Mokhzani will have until May 25 to comply with MACC’s notice.

“We considered some requests. This is probably the last (extension),” said the source.

Mirzan was initially given a period from January 15 to February 15 to do so but requested an extension until March 15.

Mokhzani was originally given a period from January 25 to February 25 to declare his assets and requested an extension until March 25.

On Thursday, MACC chief Tan Sri Azam Baki confirmed Dr Mahathir is being investigated regarding the declaration of assets.

In Mirzan’s case, the agency is investigating his business activities linked to the sale and acquisition of government-linked companies while probing into information in the Panama Papers published by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists in 2016.

Meanwhile, Mokhzani’s name did not appear in the Panama Papers.

The brothers are being investigated under the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001.

Meanwhile, last month, another of Dr Mahathir’s sons, Datuk Mukhriz Mahathir, said he believed his father was the real target of MACC’s probe. – April 26, 2024
