MIC skipping by-election? Not true: Anwar says Barisan party assures support in Kuala Kubu Baharu

PM asserts that MIC president has reaffirmed party's commitment, refuting claims of non-cooperation

SHAH ALAM – Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has refuted assertions that MIC would not support Pakatan Harapan (PH) in the upcoming Kuala Kubu Baharu by-election campaign.

This rebuttal follows announcements from Barisan Nasional (BN) component parties MIC and MCA, saying they would withhold contributions to the campaign unless the candidate is from the Barisan Nasional coalition.

“MIC President Tan Sri S. A. Vigneswaran reached out to me, affirming their commitment to assist in Kuala Kubu Baharu.

“The reports claiming that (his party) will not provide its cooperation are untrue,” Anwar briefly told reporters at PKR’s special 25th-anniversary assembly at the Ideal Convention Centre today.

While addressing MIC’s involvement, Anwar refrained from commenting on MCA’s stance regarding the by-election.

Earlier, BN deputy chairman Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan implored MCA and MIC to provide assistance for the by-election.

He said this was because BN respects the honour system that the incumbent party will be given priority to field the candidate in a by-election.

Kuala Kubu Baharu’s polling day will be on May 11, while April 27 is set for nomination.

The state seat was vacated following the death of DAP’s assemblywoman, Lee Kee Hiong, who died of ovarian cancer last month. She held the seat for PH since 2013. – April 21, 2024
