KUALA LUMPUR – The suspect in the shooting incident at Kuala Lumpur International Airport last Sunday, Hafizul Harawi, had undergone a health check-up at a private hospital in Kota Bharu, Kelantan, a week before the incident.

Selangor police chief Datuk Hussein Omar Khan revealed that the medical examination was believed to have been carried out to fulfil the suspect’s job requirement in Makkah, Saudi Arabia.

“That was why the suspect was detained in front of the private hospital last Monday. He was going to collect his medical report because it was a requirement for his job in Saudi Arabia, as he planned to escape to Makkah, Saudi Arabia, through our neighbouring country, Thailand,” he told the press at Masjid Negara today.

He said the suspect’s remand period, which was to end this coming Monday, will be extended to another seven days.

“So far, we have recorded the statements of 27 individuals, including the suspect’s wife, to assist in the investigation,” he said.

Hussein said police are completing the investigation papers, which will be sent to the Deputy Public Prosecutor’s Office at the earliest possible time for charging.

“The main motive is due to personal reasons,” he said.

Earlier, the suspect was detained in front of a private hospital in Kota Bharu, Kelantan, by the Special Crime Investigation Department (D9) of the Kelantan contingent’s Crime Investigation Department at 3pm, last Monday.

The suspect was remanded for seven days until Monday to assist in the investigation under Section 8 of the Firearms (Increased Penalties) Act 1971.

Before this, Scoop had reported that a bodyguard was heavily injured after he was shot by the suspect in an incident at 1.30am last Sunday.

Based on the investigation, the suspect was aiming for his wife, ustazah Farah Cie, who was waiting for an umrah pilgrimage at KLIA, but the shots missed and hit her bodyguard instead.

The suspect had fired two shots, and one of them injured the bodyguard, who is now still being treated at Cyberjaya Hospital.

Bukit Aman Crime Investigation Department director Datuk Seri Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain said the main motive of the case was personal issues between the suspect and his wife. – April 20, 2024
