Inappropriate, unnecessary to harass non-boycotters: BDS Malaysia

Chairman stresses importance of being prudent in preaching because abusive, vulgar actions could shed negative light on movement

KUALA LUMPUR – There is no need to physically harass those who refuse to boycott entities linked to Israel, said BDS (Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions) Malaysia.

Its chairman Mohd Nazari Ismail said any form of harassment is inappropriate and should be avoided.

His remarks came after recent social media posts disparaging fast-food patrons went viral.

“We have to preach prudently and properly if we want to convince people. This is also stated in the Quran – to be prudent in your preaching.

“So abusive or vulgar words must be avoided as it is not the proper way.

“Those who wanted to call for a boycott should explain why the fast-food chain is the target of an international boycott movement,” he said in a statement today.

He also said the recent harassment of a fast-food patron in Kuantan, Pahang could have given a negative perception to the ongoing boycott, which was fuelled by “sincere efforts” to help enlighten the public on the current plight of the Palestinians.

“We have clear laws in this country, which we must obey.

“For example, if we saw a Muslim enter a gambling shop, we cannot physically hit the individual but we could advise him instead.

“The same goes when it comes to boycotting entities linked with Israel. We can always advise those who refuse to boycott these entities, or explain to them what is currently happening in Palestine and why we are boycotting these entities.”

As of last Saturday, five men were arrested after allegedly provoking and threatening a customer at a McDonald’s outlet in Sg Isap in Kuantan.

Aged between 27 and 43, the suspects were a bank officer, car salesman, contractor, business owner and army personnel. – April 16, 2024
