KUALA LUMPUR – Personal issues between the suspect and his wife are believed to be the main motive behind last Sunday’s shooting incident at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) Terminal 1.

Bukit Aman’s criminal investigation department director Datuk Seri Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain said, so far, no other motive had been detected for the incident where the suspect, Hafizul Harawi, 38, had opened fire at his estranged wife, Farah Md Isa or Farah Cie.

Interrogation of the suspect led police to believe that he was a normal person.

“So far, we have not found any other factors that might have prompted the suspect to attempt to shoot his wife.

“The suspect will be sent to Selangor for further action. Other witnesses will also be called to assist in the investigation of this case,” he said.

Shuhaily said the suspect used an Austrian Glock 19 pistol, believed to have been illegally obtained from a neighbouring country.

“Investigations are also underway to determine how the firearm was smuggled into the country,” he said, adding that the suspect visited a private hospital in Kelantan to obtain a medical report before being arrested at 3pm yesterday.

Police are still investigating the suspect’s motive for obtaining the medical report, whether it was to apply for a visa or for some other reason, he said.

“The suspect had already undergone a health check-up at the private hospital before the shooting. He returned yesterday to collect the report,’ he added.

Police had previously confirmed that the suspect had acted alone and fled to the north after the shooting incident.

The suspect was remanded for seven days, starting today until Monday, to assist in the investigation under Section 8 of the Firearms (Increased Penalties) Act 1971.

It was reported that a murder attempt at KLIA left a bodyguard severely injured in the shooting, which occurred at around 1.30am in the arrival hall of the airport.

Hafizul fired two shots, one of which hit the victim, a personal bodyguard.

He then fled the scene. Follow-up investigations showed that he had intended to shoot his wife, who was waiting for the arrival of an umrah group.

The bodyguard is reported to be in stable condition at the hospital. – April 16, 2024
