This based on items seized from Hafizul Harawi, including cash in riyals, baht

KUALA LUMPUR – Police have not ruled out the possibility that Hafizul Harawi, the suspect who opened fire at Kuala Lumpur International Airport Terminal 1 on Sunday morning, intended to escape to Mecca, Saudi Arabia via Thailand.

Bukit Aman’s criminal investigation department director Datuk Seri Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain said this was based on items confiscated from the 38-year-old, which included sums of cash in riyals and baht.

“Apart from cash, police also confiscated a pistol, 33 rounds of ammunition, firecrackers, six mobile phones and passports,” he said during a press conference held at the Kelantan police contingent headquarters today.

Shuhaily said the suspect arrived in Kelantan last Sunday afternoon and checked into a hotel using another person’s identity, which complicated the authorities’ efforts to track his location.

Earlier, the suspect was remanded for seven days until next Monday to assist in the investigation under Section 8 of the Firearms (Increased Penalties) Act 1971.

Scoop previously reported that a bodyguard was seriously injured after being shot by a suspect involved in an incident at 1.30am last Sunday.

Based on investigations, the suspect had intended to shoot his wife, Farah Md Isa or Farah Cie, who was waiting for umrah pilgrims to return.

The suspect fired twice, with one of the bullets striking the bodyguard, who is currently receiving treatment at Cyberjaya Hospital.

The suspect was arrested by the special criminal investigation department of Kelantan police’s CID in front of a private hospital in Kota Bharu, Kelantan, at 3pm yesterday.

Inspector General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain confirmed the arrest. – April 16, 2024
