This after products found to contain more than 5% pork, says food regulator

KUALA LUMPUR – Singapore has ordered a recall of two Samy Instant Cooking Bak Kut Teh With Rice products imported from Malaysia for being produced by an “unapproved source”.

The recall affects the dry and soup instant mixes, which were found to contain more than 5% pork, the Singapore Food Agency (SFA) said in a statement yesterday.

“This product contains more than five percent pork. Meat and meat products that contain more than five percent of meat can only be imported from accredited sources,” it said.

The dry mix weighs 350g while the soup version weighs 450g.

“As a precautionary measure, SFA has directed the importers, Biscotti Trading Pte Ltd and Boughtnex Pte Ltd, to recall the implicated products. The recall is ongoing,” the SFA added.

The SFA also advised those who had already bought the products not to consume them. If already eaten and feeling unwell, consumers should seek medical attention, it added.

Regarding its regulation on accreditation of imported products with more than 5% meat content, the SFA noted that this was not the case for beef products, which required accreditation regardless of percentage content.

The instant Samy products are labelled with the claim that they are “Klang famous authentic bak kut teh.”

The brand’s logo is the same as the popular bak kut teh restaurant chain in Malaysia called Samy & Min.

This is the second product from Malaysia to be recalled by the SFA in one day, after a similar order was issued for Kingu Ginseng Candy.

The SFA found the candy to contain tadalafil, a prescription medicine used to treat erectile dysfunction.

SFA said it was working with various e-commerce platforms to remove listings of the candy and was warning retailers to stop selling the product immediately.

It said tadalafil should only be given under medical supervision and its inappropriate use posed increased risks of serious adverse effects, including heart attack, stroke, headache, migraine, irregular heart rate and priapism (painful erections). – April 13, 2024
